1. Fundraising Coordinator

Contract: Permanent, full-time
Based: Bath
Salary: £29,000 - £34,000 dependent upon experience, plus benefits


About the Role:

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) investigates, exposes and campaigns to end environmental injustice – the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity and the associated threat to basic human rights.

We are recruiting a Fundraising Coordinator to expand and diversify the range of major grant-makers who support EJF’s work protecting the environment, people and wildlife.

The role will join a dynamic and dedicated international team that has a history of ‘punching above its weight’, delivering long-term impact Protecting People and Planet. You will work closely with the senior management team to develop the fundraising strategy and implement this with team members based in the UK and our international offices. You will research, initiate and nurture relationships with grant-makers and other donors, write and present compelling funding applications, and provide reports and updates that show the impact of their support.

Key tasks:

  • With the Directors, develop and implement a time-bound fundraising strategy and priority targets to secure income from new and additional major trusts, foundations and statutory bodies in the UK and overseas.
  • Identify new opportunities to generate income from individual donors and like-minded, ethical business, expanding the existing portfolio.
  • Submit winning grant applications, in writing and in person, with the confidence to represent EJF to funders.
  • Create an efficient system to record applications, follow-up and reporting needs and timeframes, including materials, film or photos submitted to funders.
  • Update the senior management team and colleagues, and report on successful funding applications and reporting needs.
  • Work with the communications team to ensure we profile funding support in our published materials, films, annual report and online.

2. Coalition: Project Coordinator/Researcher

BASED: London or Brussels
SALARY RANGE: £28,000 – £35,000 pro rata dependent upon experience
CONTRACT: Fixed term up to 3 years, part time

About the Role:

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, Pew Charitable Trusts, The Nature Conservancy and WWF have formed the EU IUU coalition working together to ensure that the EU IUU Regulation is implemented to its full effectiveness.

The coalition is about to carry out a 3-year project to promote some of the EU’s best practices on ocean governance and fisheries transparency in in other regions such as East Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Using the EU’s influence as a major flag and market State, we will help the EU to drive policy change at the global level, whilst also investing in improving its own systems and increasing transparency. To achieve this, we will work with the EU as it implements its commitment to improve ocean governance, urging them to be ambitious and ensuring that ongoing positive reforms are sustained. Our approach to make this happen is through engagement with key decision makers, strengthening relationships with the seafood industry and NGOs, engaging citizens on the topic, using media strategically and providing intelligence to the EU on what is happening in other countries.

In addition, during the course of 2018, members of the coalition will also work together on the revision of the EU’s Control Regulation (one of the three key regulations implementing the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy). Drawing from the successful revision of the EU external fleet Regulation in 2016/2017, the coalition aims to ensure that the revised regulation reflects best practices with respect to monitoring, control and surveillance, sanctioning and traceability and, ultimately, sustainability and conservation.

To support the delivery of these objectives, the coalition is seeking a part-time Project Coordinator/Researcher who would be responsible for the successful management of the project and support relevant research. The individual we seek will have excellent management skills capable of organizing and working with a dispersed and diverse multinational team. Good negotiation skills and team building traits are a must as is experience in working within coalitions. Research, proofreading and writing skills to support the work where needed are also required. Good communications skills, initiative and drive are important.

Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the successful coordination of the project in line with the agreed coalition shared work plan and activities: organising calls and meetings, drafting agendas and meeting notes, keeping track of agreed activities and deadlines.
  • Responsible for the management of the project: ensuring good development of agreed work plans and activities in line with project description, keeping track of budget and expenses (with the support of EJF’s finance team), providing project partners/donors with regular updates on project progress, as needed.
  • Responsible for specific research tasks to further campaign objectives (as required)
  • Support work on activities as required (stakeholders mail-outs, organising events, communications support).

The project is designed as a three-year effort.

Qualifications and Characteristics:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional qualification required; Master's degree in a relevant area or equivalent experience preferred;
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience required (project management, leading multi-stakeholder coalitions). Some experience in relation to EU fisheries policy and/or knowledge of EU decision process is desirable but not required;
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and strategic skills. Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem and identify the means to address it. A strong commitment to producing measurable results;
  • Demonstrated experience in research as well as producing briefings and reports.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues. Clear, effective writing style and experience with editing documents;
  • A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrates ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of collaboration and specific constraints;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project by anticipating possible outcomes. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate;
  • Seasoned judgment, able to justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
